About the Role
We are hiring a Sr. Manager, Data Engineering to lead multiple engineering teams — or one strategically critical area — within our real-time event processing platform. You will drive cross-team effectiveness, coach people and set area-level standards for reliability, governance, and execution. You will shape how our event platform scales, how our engineers grow, and how we operate under the demands of a global fintech environment. Main Responsibilities:
Portfolio & Multi-Team Leadership
Lead an engineering area spanning multiple teams or services within the event platform.
Drive cross-team prioritization: resolve dependency conflicts, remove structural bottlenecks, ensure operating consistency.
Set area-level expectations for architecture governance, reliability, security posture, and execution quality.
People & Organizational Development
Strengthen succession depth — identify and develop future managers and tech leads.
Own hiring plans across your area; calibrate hiring bars and ensure diverse pipeline.
Build a culture where constructive debate, accountability, and continuous learning are the norm.
Run performance calibrations across teams; ensure fairness and consistency in reviews and promotions.
Delivery & Operational Excellence
Own short-term operational plans (< 1 year) for your area; align with broader org strategy.
Coordinate major incidents, cross-team escalations, and delivery risks that span team boundaries.
Drive initiatives to improve platform reliability, cost efficiency, and developer experience.
Ensure all teams maintain healthy on-call rotations, runbooks, and incident response practices.
Technical Governance
Maintain portfolio-level architecture fluency: event processing, streaming, serverless, observability.
Run or sponsor architecture reviews for cross-cutting changes.
Champion platform cost/risk/quality trade-offs at the area level.
Ensure engineering standards are consistent across teams (CI/CD, testing, security, documentation).
Cross-Functional & Upward Partnership
Partner with Product, Analytics, Security, Compliance, and peer engineering leaders.
Represent your area in leadership forums; communicate risks, needs, and achievements clearly.
Influence practices and policies within the job function through data-driven proposals.
This is a remote position. A remote position does not require job duties be performed within proximity of a Visa office location. Remote positions may be required to be present at a Visa office with scheduled notice.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
8+ years of relevant work experience with a Bachelor’s Degree or at least 5 years of experience with an Advanced Degree (e.g. Masters, MBA, JD, MD) or 2 years of work experience with a PhD, OR 11+ years of relevant work experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
9 or more years of relevant work experience with a Bachelor Degree or 7 or more relevant years of experience with an Advanced Degree (e.g. Masters, MBA, JD, MD) or 3 or more years of experience with a PhD
Portfolio planning & multi-team dependency management
Architecture governance for event-driven / streaming platforms
AWS serverless & streaming ecosystem (Lambda, Kinesis, EventBridge, Step Functions, SQS/SNS)
Distributed systems design (fault tolerance, idempotency, backpressure, at-least-once delivery)
Org design fundamentals (team topology, span of control, role clarity)
Operating review cadence (delivery reviews, architecture reviews, incident reviews)
Platform cost/risk/quality trade-off analysis
Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) and CI/CD governance
Observability & SRE practices (SLO/SLI, CloudWatch, Grafana, distributed tracing)
Golang and/or Python platform services (architecture-level fluency)
Apache Kafka advanced concepts
Schema management & evolution (Avro, Protobuf, Schema Registry)
Security & compliance patterns (encryption, PII handling, rate limiting)
Financial planning (budget, headcount, cloud cost forecasting)
