Job Description
Visa’s Technology Organization is a community of problem solvers and innovators reshaping the future of commerce—and how we enable Visa talent to do their best work. We operate the world’s most sophisticated processing networks capable of handling more than 65k secure transactions a second across 80M merchants, 15k Financial Institutions, and billions of everyday people. Within People Technology, we apply the same engineering rigor to employee platforms and experiences—building secure, scalable, and reliable capabilities across the employee lifecycle (e.g., onboarding, HR services, manager enablement, and internal mobility).
The Opportunity:
We are seeking a Senior Director of Software Engineering to lead strategic and technical innovation for large-scale, distributed People Technology platforms that power Visa’s global workforce. This role is responsible for defining the long-term platform vision and driving a cloud-first, AI-first architecture to deliver highly available, secure, and performant systems at scale. As a senior leader, you will set a company-wide example of engineering excellence—enabling teams to plan effectively, execute with discipline, and continuously improve to deliver consistent, predictable outcomes. You will lead the design, development, and deployment of next-generation GenAI-powered solutions that support employees, managers, executives, recruiters, and People Business Partners through secure self-service, intelligent knowledge discovery, and workflow automation. Operating at the intersection of engineering, product, and HR strategy, you will collaborate closely with HR stakeholders, Product, Security/Privacy, and enterprise technology teams to translate complex business needs into scalable, measurable, and trustworthy solutions, ensuring strong governance, role-based access, auditability, and responsible use of employee data.
The Work itself:
- Lead an organization of highly capable software engineering to design and build software and services that support the full employee population, while influencing Visa’s internal standards for scalability, security, privacy, and reusability
- Collaborate cross-functionally (HR, Product, UX, Data, Security/Privacy, and Engineering) to create clear design artifacts and deliver best-in-class People Technology solutions
- Own end-to-end delivery in agile squads—planning, implementation, testing, rollout, telemetry, and continuous improvements tied to outcomes (e.g., time-to-resolution, self-service containment, employee satisfaction)
- Develop robust and scalable GenAI products (e.g., search/Q&A, summarization, and workflow copilots) designed for a range of employee personas, including executives, managers, and People Business Partners
- Integrate with core People systems and services (e.g., identity/SSO, HR platforms, HR case management, knowledge bases) and ensure role-based access, data minimization, and auditability
- Proven expertise across modern technology stacks, including Java/J2EE, Spring Boot, React, RESTful APIs, SQL/NoSQL databases, Kubernetes, and test automation frameworks.
- Foster continuous learning and engineering excellence by mentoring teammates, driving design reviews, and improving reliability, observability, and delivery practices
Essential Functions:
- Partner with Product Owners and HR stakeholders to gather, refine, and prioritize requirements, leveraging and extending existing platforms and shared services where appropriate
- Design and implement advanced GenAI architectures that are robust, scalable, and secure, including integrations across the internal ecosystem and controls for permissions, privacy, and compliance
- Contribute to high-quality technical and user documentation, and establish standard practices for maintainability, supportability, and operational readiness
- Lead end-to-end delivery of new capabilities within a product area—from design through production rollout—while ensuring quality, performance, and reliability
Qualifications
Qualifications:
- Basic Qualifications: 15+ years of relevant work experience and a Bachelor’s degree, OR 13+ years of relevant work experience
- Preferred Qualifications: 12 or more years of progressive engineering experience, including 10+ years leading large-scale transformation, product development and delivery team
- Energy and Experience: Growth mindset with a passion for People Technology/employee experience; experience delivering HR, employee-facing, or enterprise workflow solutions is preferred
- Challenge the Status Quo: Comfortable pushing boundaries—simplifying experiences, automating workflows, and experimenting responsibly to improve outcomes
- Technology Expertise: Strong proficiency in one or more modern stacks (frontend, backend, cloud), plus experience with performance optimization, data security, data modeling, and GenAI/LLM-enabled application patterns (e.g., RAG, prompt/tool orchestration, evaluation, and observability). Experience with role-based access control and sensitive data handling (PII) is highly valued.
- Builder: Experience building, deploying, and driving adoption of modern GenAI services and web applications with strong quality, scalability, and operational excellence
- Learner: Constant drive to learn and apply new technologies (e.g., React/Angular, Kubernetes, Docker) and improve engineering practices
Partnership: Experience collaborating with Product, UX, QA, DevOps/SRE, Agile/Scrum teams, and stakeholders such as HR and Security/Privacy to deliver outcomes
