The Welfare and Self-Reliance (WSR) Department is seeking to appoint a Senior Farm Laborer who will be based at Niumate Tonga Plantation School. This is a permanent full-time position reporting to the Assistant Farm Manager.
This role supports the mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter‑day Saints by contributing to welfare farm operations that foster self‑reliance and care for those in need. It involves operating farm machinery and performing physical labour to support planting, cultivation, irrigation, and harvesting activities.
Responsibilities
As Senior Farm Laborer, you will operate tractors, trucks, harvesters, and towed equipment to cultivate, plant, fertilise, spray, and harvest crops, including cutting hay and harvesting wheat. The role includes operating irrigation tubing and pipes throughout the farming project, performing manual farm tasks, and assisting with livestock as required. You will also carry out minor mechanical adjustments and repairs, refuel and service machinery, and safely prepare and handle agricultural chemicals in support of daily farm operations.
Requirements
3 years’ prior agricultural farm experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience
1 year’s demonstrated experience operating and maintaining basic farm machinery and equipment
Strong mechanical aptitude with proven ability to perform minor equipment adjustments and repairs
A valid driver’s licence appropriate for farm equipment operation
Physical capability to perform sustained manual labour and work long, strenuous hours in varying climate conditions
Ability to work steadily, efficiently, and follow verbal instructions from a supervisor
Experience with planting, cultivating, irrigating, and harvesting crops
Willingness to handle fertilisers, herbicides, and pesticides in a safe and responsible manner
High integrity, reliability, and sound judgement in completing assigned tasks
Commitment to Church values and the ability to meet Church workforce eligibility and worthiness requirements
Proof of legal right to work in Tonga
A police background check may be required
