Job Summary

A Data Centre and Critical Building Engineer are responsible for the continuous, uninterrupted operation of mission-critical facilities.
They oversee facility infrastructures such as high-voltage power systems, HVAC cooling units, fire suppression, and BMS (Building Management Systems)—to ensure maximum uptime, energy efficiency, and regulatory compliance.

Job Description

Core Responsibilities

  • Infrastructure Monitoring: Conduct routine inspections of mechanical and electrical equipment to ensure optimal performance.
  • Uptime & Maintenance Management: Develop and execute preventative and corrective maintenance schedules to prevent hardware or facility failures.
  • Incident Response: Troubleshoot and resolve critical failures relating to power distribution, cooling, and environmental controls.
  • Commissioning & Upgrades: Assist in the testing and commissioning of new equipment or facility fit-outs.
  • Compliance & Safety: Ensure the facility adheres to all building codes, fire regulations, and industry data centre standards.

Key Requirements & Qualifications

  • Educational Background: Bachelor's degree in electrical, mechanical, or building services engineering.
  • Experience: Typically 3 to 10+ years of proven experience in data centre operations, critical infrastructure management, or heavy commercial built environments.
  • Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), standby generators, cooling towers, and switchgear.
  • System Familiarity: Proficiency with Building Management Systems (BMS), SCADA, and power monitoring software

Technical Competencies Description Knowledge of: Security management (physical and logical) Financial Management (budget and expense management and control, OPEX, CAPEX) People Management Contract Management Business Processes Project Management Mainframe and other traditional server operations Cloud operations Computer data centre management, inclusive of space and capacity planning IT procurement Maintenance and supplier management Computer infrastructure hardware management Service level management ISO, ITIL, COBIT Various and relevant legislations SITA ACT Company’s ACT PFMA ICT Legislations.

Skills: Hosting Management.

Education

Bachelor`s Degrees and Advanced Diplomas: Manufacturing, Engineering and Technology (Required)
