About the Role

Design, build, and operate shared cloud infrastructure platforms that multiple product and application teams depend on.
This role focuses on delivering secure, stable, and scalable AWS and Azure environments, container platforms (including Kubernetes), networking foundations, and reusable platform components that accelerate delivery across ERM.
The engineer ensures cloud operational excellence through monitoring, optimisation, and implementation of consistent engineering patterns that support cost efficiency and reliability.

Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities

Cloud Infrastructure Engineering

  • Design, build, and operate shared cloud infrastructure across AWS and Azure, including environments, VPCs/VNets, subnets, gateways, and networking services.

  • Implement scalable compute foundations (e.g., Kubernetes clusters, serverless functions, container runtimes) used by multiple teams.

  • Support provisioning and lifecycle management of cloud resources through infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, Bicep, CloudFormation).

Container Platforms & Runtime Operations

  • Deploy, configure, and maintain Kubernetes clusters (EKS, AKS) to support application workloads.

  • Implement workload deployment patterns, cluster upgrades, node scaling, and platform security controls.

  • Work with application and DevOps teams to onboard services onto shared container platforms.

Security, Stability & Operational Readiness

  • Implement cloud security standards (IAM, RBAC, network security, encryption, secrets management).

  • Ensure platform stability through health checks, diagnostics, patching, and high‑availability configurations.

  • Contribute to incident response, root cause analysis, and proactive reliability improvements.

Monitoring, Observability & Cost Efficiency

  • Implement and manage monitoring, logging, and alerting solutions across cloud environments.

  • Track and optimise cloud consumption for cost efficiency using tagging, rightsizing, and automated remediation patterns.

  • Support operational visibility for application teams and ensure platform telemetry meets reliability needs.

Reusable Platform Patterns & Ways of Working

  • Build standardised infrastructure modules, templates, and deployment patterns for consistent usage across pods/projects.

  • Contribute to engineering standards for cloud environments, network design, container best practices, and operational guardrails.

  • Support onboarding, documentation, and knowledge sharing for teams consuming cloud/platform services.

Influence And Decision-Making Authority

  • Influence architectural decisions for cloud environments, container platforms, and shared infrastructure patterns.

  • Recommend improvements to cloud security posture, cost efficiency, and operational reliability.

  • Shape reusable platform components, IaC modules, and standard delivery workflows adopted across engineering teams.

  • Provide expert input into multi-cloud operating models and environment strategy.

Job Requirements & Capabilities

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 5+ years' experience in cloud/platform engineering roles.

  • Hands-on experience operating production systems in AWS and Azure.

  • Experience designing, building, and maintaining cloud infrastructure for multi-team or enterprise environments.

Technical Skills

  • Strong knowledge of AWS and Azure services across compute, storage, networking, IAM, and security.

  • Hands-on experience with Kubernetes (EKS, AKS), including deployments, scaling, and platform operations.

  • Proficiency in IaC tools (Terraform, Bicep, CloudFormation) and environment automation.

  • Familiarity with CI/CD integration for environment provisioning and application deployment.

  • Experience with monitoring, logging, and observability tools (CloudWatch, Azure Monitor, Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, etc.).

  • Understanding of network design, VPNs, load balancers, DNS, private endpoints, and hybrid connectivity.

Behavioural Skills

  • Strong problem-solving ability and a reliability-focused engineering mindset.

  • Clear communicator able to collaborate with architects, developers, and DevOps/platform teams.

  • Quality‑minded approach to automation, documentation, and operational consistency.

  • Willingness to learn and adapt as cloud standards and technologies evolve.

Desirable / Nice to Have

  • Certifications such as AWS Solutions Architect (Associate), Azure Administrator Associate, or equivalent.

  • Experience with container security, image scanning, and runtime security tools.

  • Exposure to service mesh technologies (Istio, Linkerd) or advanced Kubernetes networking.

  • Experience implementing multi-region or multi-cloud deployment patterns.

  • Familiarity with FinOps practices and cost governance frameworks.

  • Experience in pod-based delivery teams or platform enablement roles.
