About the Role
Shape the Future of Clean Air & Climate Solutions
At ERM, you won’t just work on air quality projects—you’ll help solve some of the most complex environmental challenges facing industry today. This Consultant, Air Quality and Meteorology Scientist or Engineer role is an opportunity for an experienced professional to step into a strategic, high‑impact position where your technical expertise directly influences responsible development across Canada.
Whether you’re in Vancouver, Calgary, or elsewhere in Canada, you’ll be part of a high-performing team of atmospheric scientists and engineers driving innovative solutions in air quality, emissions, permitting, and climate change. ERM’s Air Quality & Climate Change community is one of the largest and fastest‑growing in the industry, giving you unmatched access to nationally recognized experts, diverse projects, and long-term career development.
Why This Role Matters
Industries across Canada are facing rising expectations around emissions, climate change, and regulatory compliance. As a Consultant, you will play a central role in helping clients navigate these challenges, enabling sustainable growth while protecting air quality for surrounding communities. Your work will influence major decisions in the oil & gas, energy, and mining sectors, and contribute to shaping climate strategies across North America.
What Your Impact Is
In this role, you will be trusted as both a technical specialist and emerging project leader. You will conduct advanced dispersion modelling, lead permitting analysis, support environmental assessments, design air quality monitoring plans, and advance clients’ progress on greenhouse gas inventories and emission reduction programs. Your work will ensure regulatory compliance, strengthen environmental stewardship, and help clients adapt to emerging climate policies.
What You’ll Bring
Required
- Bachelors in environmental, mining or chemical engineering, atmospheric science, or a related field (post‑graduate degree considered an asset).
- 2-3+ years of direct consulting or industry experience.
- Demonstrated experience with CALPUFF and AERMOD air dispersion modelling.
- Experience supporting Environmental Assessments.
- Strong understanding of air emissions, emissions reporting, and regulatory compliance processes.
- Advanced spreadsheet and database proficiency.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced consulting environment, manage multiple assignments, meet deadlines, and travel as needed.
- This position is not eligible for immigration sponsorship.
Preferred
- Experience developing air quality permits within Alberta and BC.
- Experience conducting fieldwork for meteorological or air quality instrumentation installation.
- Familiarity with NPRI reporting and emission inventories.
- Experience engaging with regulators on permitting and compliance.
- Master’s degree and either a current professional engineering designation or the qualifications necessary to obtain PE registration.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct dispersion modelling assessments using CALPUFF and AERMOD to help clients understand and manage project-related air quality impacts.
- Perform air quality and regulatory analyses that support project approvals, compliance evaluations, and applicability assessments.
- Ensure quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) of modelling files, datasets, and deliverables.
- Develop clear, defensible technical recommendations and contribute to high‑quality reporting used by clients, regulators, and project teams.
- Draft practical and effective air quality management and monitoring plans tailored to site conditions and regulatory requirements.
- Develop complete and technically accurate air quality permit applications for projects in Alberta and British Columbia, working closely with senior team members and clients.
- Build emission inventories and NPRI submissions that accurately quantify air pollutant emissions and support compliance, planning, and sustainability initiatives.
- Review regulatory compliance and liaise with local regulators during permit review and issuance.
- Implement climate change projects such as GHG inventories, emission reduction strategies, energy efficiency initiatives, public disclosure, and verification.
- Support meteorology and air quality field programs, including instrumentation, installation, and troubleshooting.
- Manage multiple tasks across scope, budget, and schedule requirements while ensuring technical excellence.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, colleagues, and subcontractors.
For the Consultant, Air Quality and Meteorology Scientist or Engineer position, the anticipated annual base pay is $73,161–$94,217 (CAD). Actual pay will depend on factors such as education, experience, skills, location, performance, and business needs. In some cases, pay may fall outside this range. This role may be eligible for bonus pay (casual and fixed term/flex force employees are not bonus eligible).
We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including paid time off, parental leave, medical, dental, vision, life, disability, AD&D insurance, 401(k) or RRSP/DPSP, and other applicable benefits to eligible employees.
