Introduction to the Team

Expedia Technology teams partner with our Product teams to create innovative products, services, and tools that deliver high-quality experiences for travelers, partners, and employees. A singular technology platform powered by data and machine learning provides secure, differentiated, and personalized experiences that drive loyalty and traveler satisfaction.

The Software Development Engineer III position is part of the Payments Reconciliation team within Expedia Global Payments, under the Book-to-Trip division. This team builds and maintains consumer reconciliation services and the administrative tools used to configure the entire consumer payments ecosystem, ensuring the operational health of payment processing across the platform.

Our services are designed with security, scalability, and availability in mind, supporting both pay-in and pay-out transactions on a global scale. We are looking for an engineer who takes strong ownership of systems and outcomes, not just code delivery. In this role, you will be expected to think end-to-end, proactively identify gaps and risks, and drive solutions from design through production support. As a key engineer on this team, you'll apply your passion for backend development, cloud computing, and modern engineering practices to solve real-world challenges that impact millions of travelers worldwide.

In this role, you will:

  • Design, build, own, and continuously improve scalable backend payment services that support Expedia’s global travel platform

  • Take end-to-end ownership of services and features, from technical design and implementation through testing, deployment, monitoring, and long-term operational excellence

  • Apply software design principles, data structures, design patterns, and computer science fundamentals to write code that is clean, maintainable, optimized, and modular

  • Implement secure data handling practices to protect payment information and meet compliance standards

  • Recommend and apply architectural patterns or GenAI capabilities to improve system design, solve business problems, and drive innovation

  • Own service reliability by improving observability, automation, alerting, and operational readiness, and by proactively addressing risks before they become customer-impacting issues

  • Investigate production issues with urgency, drive root-cause analysis, and implement durable fixes that improve system resilience over time

  • Lead technical execution across cross-functional teams, bringing clarity to ambiguous problems and ensuring high-impact work is delivered with quality and accountability

  • Act as a steward of the team’s systems, raising the bar on engineering excellence, operational discipline, and ownership culture

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or Master's in a related technical field, or equivalent related professional experience

  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience with significant hands-on experience building and operating distributed cloud services

  • Proven track record of taking ownership of complex technical problems and driving solutions through to completion with a high standard of quality

  • Expertise in Java, with hands-on experience integrating services with relational and NoSQL databases

  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure/test automation, and delivering features in Agile development environments

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working on payment platforms or implementing backend services leveraging GenAI technologies

  • Experience acting as a technical owner for services or components, including making design decisions, driving cross-team alignment, and ensuring strong operational outcomes

  • Experience contributing to multiple multi-quarter, cross-team projects with clear accountability for delivery and results

  • Experience supporting complex distributed systems in production through monitoring, debugging, incident resolution, and root-cause analysis

  • Demonstrated experience designing and deploying scalable services on AWS
