Team Summary

The Visa Asia Pacific Legal team manages Visa's legal affairs in the Asia Pacific region. Our team provides advice and services to ensure business goals are successfully met and that Visa's brand and reputation are protected while minimizing legal liability and regulatory risk. What a Counsel (VAS Marketing and Commercial) in Legal does at Visa:

The position is for a highly skilled, motivated, and energetic lawyer to join Visa’s AP legal team, to represent the AP Legal hub team for Visa’s value added services, focusing on marketing and commercial legal work across an evolving portfolio of go-to-market offerings and solutions.

The scope of work is broad, dynamic and includes (but is not limited to)

  • Acting as dedicated legal support (and go-to lawyer) for specific AP hub business groups within the VAS, Marketing, Products and other functions as needs arise from to time, as assigned by the Vice President, Legal.
  • Designing, developing and implementing workflow designs, playbooks and trainings for the supported AP hub business groups, and coordinating closely with other global and/or country lawyers for rollout in other jurisdiction(s) within AP.
  • Conducting reviews of marketing creatives as well as external communications in a broad variety of channels and formats (including physical, online and social/digital channels) for AP
  • Liasing with other stakeholders (across functions and geographies) to align on global and/or regional VAS marketing projects, contracts and other initiatives for launch in AP.
  • Review, drafting and negotiation of a wide variety of documents required by the supported teams, including but not limited to marketing collaboration contracts, B2B VAS marketing services, sponsorship contracts, consumer facing T&Cs, IP assignments, relevant consent forms etc,
  • Be a specialized IP support and resource for any other commercial portfolios and initiatives in the AP region as required from time to time,
  • Take on, as necessary, legal support for other support functions.

The position will report to Vice President, Legal.

The applicant is expected to have strong knowledge and expertise in intellectual property and marketing/consumer laws, and ideally have solid experience managing consumer and marketing legal work either in a law firm or MNC environment. Working knowledge of privacy/data laws (particularly as they relate to consumer marketing) is also required. Excellent academics from a reputable university are essential.

We are looking for a strong legal advisor and commercial lawyer rolled into one with excellent communication and analytical skills, who is self-motivated and willing to work reasonably hard. Prior payments experience is not required, although the applicant must be willing to learn Visa's business model and the payments industry. Must also be keen to learn and take on new areas of legal support where required by the Vice President, Legal.

You will be a member of a regional legal team that works at the cutting edge of new payment technologies, innovation and the fintech industry in an increasingly regulated environment, which brings unique and novel challenges in the commercial/technology/marketing law space.

Qualifications

We are looking for a strong leader who brings of breadth of experience and knowledge of the industry and our business. As a candidate, you should have:

  • Minimum 8 -9 years marketing and consumer law work, some of which must be at a top tier law firm or MNC.

  • Strong knowledge and experience in intellectual property law (especially in the context of marketing and consumer related work) are a must

  • Experience negotiating B2B contracts from a service provider perspective with large banks/financial institutions across the Asia Pacific region

  • Working knowledge of data/privacy laws in the Asia Pacific region

  • Strong knowledge and experience of central bank outsourcing regime(s) within the Asia Pacific region, especially Singapore

  • Strong academic credentials, including a degree from a well-recognized and reputable law school in a common law jurisdiction

  • Must be able to work independently and interface with executive level stakeholders with little or no supervision, but also be a good team player

  • Must be a practical and proactive problem-solver, must have a strong business acumen and be confident, mature and calm under fire

  • Excellent legal analytical skills with the ability to integrate legal advice and business knowledge, while providing balanced advice regarding risks and benefits

  • While not a must, solid litigation experience in large commercial cases (especially involving competition law matters, and/or IP litigation) will be viewed very favourably.

  • Admission to practice in a Commonwealth jurisdiction is preferred

  • Must be able to live and work in Singapore
