About the Role

ERM is looking for a Consultant, Archaeologist. This is a full-time, salary-based position based from the Indianapolis ERM office; candidates throughout the Midwest will also be considered. Applicants should be familiar with the relevant regulatory processes in this region (i.e., federal, state, and municipal) with a focus on the Midwest and Plains. Working with an experienced Archaeologist, the successful candidate will conduct Phase I, II, and III archaeological fieldwork and office-based activities, including documenting and evaluating archaeological sites for eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), and assessing project effects under the provisions of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA).

This individual will also participate in project planning and logistics and prepare appropriate report sections detailing the survey findings and assessment of resources. Successful candidates must be flexible and responsive to a challenging and changing work environment where schedules and tasks fluctuate according to the needs of the projects and clients. Based in the Midwest, the successful candidate will provide technical support for archaeological desktop and field studies for clients within the United States.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare portions of technical reporting for desktop-level or field-based cultural resources investigations or impact assessments, including contributing to cultural resources sections of larger federal and state environmental documents.

  • Coordinate participate in field investigations, including reconnaissance- and pedestrian-level surveys, testing/excavations, and construction monitoring for cultural resources.

  • Interact with various State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPO).

  • Perform research and author portions of technical reports under the supervision of principal investigators, project managers, and partners.

  • Communicate with senior staff and teaming partners to support environmental analyses.

  • Provide technical consulting skills to support the growth of ERM’s business and client base in the area of archaeology and cultural heritage

  • Collaborate with different multi-disciplinary teams consisting of environmental planners, biologists, wetland specialists, GIS specialists, engineers, etc. across ERM’s United States geography to serve our clients in the energy sector.

  • Represent ERM through communications and meetings with our clients, teaming partners, subcontractors, stakeholders, and agency counterparts.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or closely related field of study, plus 4 or more years of related paid experience.

  • Ability to be listed as Field Director on Cultural Resources Use Permits, ARPA permits, state permits, etc. for projects in the Midwest.

  • Demonstrated field director experience within the Midwest, leading inventory, survey, testing, and/or data recovery efforts.

  • Experience as primary author or co-author on agency-reviewed technical reports, to meet federal, state, and local regulatory requirements.

  • Ability to work within a team of other archaeologists or as the lone archaeologists with other technical specialists.

  • Ability and willingness to travel to field sites that will be located in the United States.

  • Fieldwork may be required up to 75% of the time during peak field season, with the remaining time spent on desktop and organizational activities.

  • Ability to walk long distances (up to 10 miles per day) in varying terrain under adverse conditions, including inclement weather, wildlife encounters, and able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs., and able to excavate shovel tests.

  • Previous experience with mapping equipment and other special application equipment (e.g., total station, GPS, ArcGIS FieldMaps or Survey123 field applications, etc.).

  • A valid driver's license and/or the ability to operate a company vehicle due to the nature of job duties, which include frequent travel to various client locations across a large geographical area.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Registered Professional Archaeologist.

  • Basic knowledge of prehistoric and historic artifacts assemblages.

  • Field experience with historic structures

  • Self-motivated; strong initiative.
