About the Role

If you’re a senior fisheries professional ready to step into a role that blends technical leadership, high‑impact project work, and the opportunity to shape the future of aquatic resource management across Canada and beyond - this is your moment.

Why This Role Matters

As a Managing Technical Consultant, Fisheries Biologist (Fixed-Term) with ERM as a full-time, fixed-term (one year for maternity coverage, with potential to transfer to regular full-time status) you’ll guide major, multimillion‑dollar projects, influence environmental outcomes at a national scale, and help drive the execution of ERM’s global strategy within a rapidly growing, world‑class Biodiversity & Ecosystems practice. This position can be located in one of ERM’s offices in Whitehorse, Yellowknife, Calgary, Saskatoon, Vancouver or Toronto.

What Your Impact Is

In this role, you will:

  • Travel to beautiful, remote regions across Canada to support field programs and stewardship initiatives.

  • Contribute to transformative mining and energy projects for major clients.

  • Play a key leadership role in a growing fisheries team delivering complex work across Canada and globally.

  • Operate from one of ERM’s major Canadian offices—or thrive in a flexible hybrid environment.

You’ll join a multidisciplinary community of aquatic scientists, hydrologists, wildlife biologists, toxicologists, and other experts to solve pressing sustainability challenges.

What You’ll Bring

  • Advanced written and oral communication skills, including technical reporting and permitting documentation.

  • Strong knowledge of federal, provincial, and territorial regulations relevant to mining and oil & gas.

  • Proven ability to manage deadlines in a fast‑paced environment, work independently with minimal supervision, and travel extensively.

  • Excellent problem‑solving skills and a strong commitment to safety.

  • Driver's License Required: This position requires a valid driver's license and/or the ability to operate a company vehicle due to the nature of job duties, which include frequent travel to various client locations across a large geographical area.

  • Pleasure Craft Operator’s License.

  • This position is not eligible for immigration sponsorship.

Preferred

  • M.Sc. in Fisheries Biology or a related discipline.

  • 6+ years of consulting experience in freshwater fish and fish habitat assessments, sampling, aquatic biology, and water quality programs.

  • Experience in hydrology, instream flow assessment, hydroacoustic/bathymetric assessment, and/or fish habitat offsetting.

  • Electrofishing certification, Intermediate First Aid, and/or Swiftwater Rescue Training.

  • Experience mentoring junior staff.

  • A positive, collaborative, self‑starter mindset aligned with ERM’s global mission.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and lead fish and fish habitat field programs across freshwater systems in Canada.

  • Support planning, implementation, and monitoring of fisheries offsetting and compensation programs.

  • Compile, manage, analyze, and interpret fish community, biology, and habitat data; support database management.

  • Prepare technical documents including baseline studies, monitoring reports, impact assessments, permitting applications, and offsetting plans.

  • Actively contribute to ERM’s Canadian and international aquatics/fisheries technical communities.

  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior biologists and field technicians.
