Job Description

The Team
You will be joining the Typeahead and Query Understanding team within Expedia's core Search platform. Your work will directly power our autocomplete systems and natural language search capabilities across all lines of business.

You will work with a modern, high-scale tech stack featuring Kotlin, Java, Elasticsearch, Kafka, AWS, Spring Boot, and cutting-edge LLM integrations. We build for massive scale and performance, engineering our Tier 1 services from the ground up to guarantee 99.99% availability and seamless reliability.


In this role, you will:

  • Design and develop complex software systems and services, applying advanced system design, API design, and data modeling techniques

  • Lead the implementation of scalable, reliable, and maintainable solutions across multiple domains or platforms

  • Drive technical decisions and mentor other engineers to elevate team knowledge and performance

  • Safely integrate and operate AI/ML-enabled solutions that improve outcomes, ensuring responsible and effective use of AI technologies

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into robust technical solutions

  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to optimize processes, code quality, and system performance

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field; or Equivalent related professional experience

  • 8+ years of professional backend software development experience in an object‑oriented language (e.g., Java, Kotlin, or similar)

  • Demonstrated ownership of services, multi-service architectures, or domain solutions at an organizational level

  • Proven expertise in advanced system design, API development, and data modeling for large-scale distributed systems

  • Familiarity with AI-driven systems, AI-assisted coding tools or workflows, and applying AI/ML concepts to real-world products

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Deep experience designing, scaling, and operating distributed systems in high-throughput production environments.

  • Track record of technical leadership, driving platform-first architectural decisions that scale across multiple product lines.

  • Proactive in optimizing software for latency, reliability, and security at massive enterprise scale.

  • Strong data-driven decision-making skills and a commitment to operational excellence and robust system telemetry.

  • Hands-on experience leveraging AI/ML and LLMs to deliver innovative, platform-centric solutions within a software engineering context.
