About the Role
Job Purpose:
The Chief Executive Officer is the accountable leader of Britam Mozambique, responsible for delivering sustainable growth across the General Insurance and Medical business lines. The CEO is accountable for full P&L performance, market expansion, regulatory compliance, operational excellence, and leadership of a high-performing organization, while positioning Britam as a leading insurer in the Mozambique market. The CEO also serves as the Principal Officer, ensuring full adherence to Mozambique’s insurance regulatory framework and maintaining strong relationships with regulators and key stakeholders.
Key responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Business Performance:
- Lead the development and execution of Mozambique’s strategy aligned to Britam Group
priorities (ASCEND 2026–2030).
- Translate strategy into clear annual business plans, budgets, and performance targets.
- Drive achievement of revenue, profitability, underwriting margin, and market share across GI and Health portfolios.
- Identify and execute growth opportunities, including new products, customer segments, and
partnerships.
- Provide high-quality reporting to the Board and Group on performance and strategic direction.
General Insurance & Medical Portfolio Management:
- Provide oversight of underwriting performance across GI and medical portfolios, ensuring
profitability and target loss ratios.
- Drive disciplined risk selection, pricing adequacy, and claims management outcomes.
Monitor portfolio trends and implement corrective actions for underperforming segments.
- Ensure strong integration between underwriting, claims, and distribution to optimise outcomes.
Commercial Growth & Distribution:
- Drive growth through multi-channel distribution, including brokers, corporate partnerships, agency networks, and digital platforms.
- Expand corporate, SME, and retail customer base across GI and health products.
- Build strategic partnerships with banks, corporates, and intermediaries.
- Champion customer-centric product innovation tailored to the Mozambique market.
- Strengthen brand positioning as a trusted and competitive insurer.
Financial Stewardship & Operational Excellence:
- Ensure strong financial management, including P&L oversight, cost optimisation, and capital allocation.
- Maintain healthy underwriting margins and expense ratios.
- Drive operational efficiency and service excellence across all functions.
- Ensure accurate financial reporting and alignment with Group standards.
Regulatory, Governance & Principal Officer Responsibilities:
- Serve as the approved Principal Officer, accountable for compliance with Mozambique insurance regulations.
- Maintain proactive relationships with regulatory authorities and industry bodies.
- Ensure timely and accurate submission of statutory and regulatory reports.
- Implement and maintain robust enterprise risk management and compliance frameworks.
- Operate within Britam Group governance structures and policies.
People Leadership & Organizational Capability:
- Build and lead a high-performing executive team.
- Drive a strong performance culture aligned to Britam values.
- Ensure development of succession pipelines and leadership bench strength.
- Lead organization design to support business growth and agility.
- Champion employee engagement, capability building, and retention
Stakeholder & Brand Leadership:
- Represent Britam Mozambique to Board, regulators, partners, and customers.
- Build strong relationships with government, industry bodies, and key partners.
- Position the company as a thought leader in insurance and health solutions.
- Safeguard and enhance the organization's reputation and brand equity.
Knowledge, experience and qualifications required:
Mandatory Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree preferred.
- Professional insurance qualification (e.g. ACII or equivalent).
- Minimum 12–15 years’ experience in insurance/financial services, with at least 5 years in
executive leadership.
- Proven P&L leadership experience in General Insurance and/or Health.
- Strong understanding of regulatory environments in Africa (Mozambique/SADC preferred).
- Fit and proper to serve as Principal Officer.
Strongly Preferred:
- Experience in emerging markets or African expansion environments.
- Track record in business growth and turnaround.
- Experience in multi-line insurance (GI + Health).
- Exposure to digital distribution and product innovation.
- Strong stakeholder management at Board and regulator level.
